Movement onboarding - sustaining the flow is about defining capacity

intros, what brought you here Q0: Scope of the convo, What is the movement? (that this room is bldg, eg away from big tech, but also could do our individual mvmts - onboarding ppl to our specific) A: this room

  • alternate hosting (non-corporate), Infrared
  • liberation/justice values aligned
  • democratic/non-hierarchical structures
  • ..

Accessibility/onboarding for this mvmt: (Trade-offs of accessing this space)

  • Linguistic
  • access to technology--infrastructure, knowledge and security
  • awareness- ease of finding information and existance
  • community (spaces like this, physical and digital)
  • safety - disability/risk, emotional/psychosocial (space for disagreement, capacity/resilience to handle conflicts)
  • Resilience -
  • economic & freedom of movement (to travel, caretakers, etc)
  • Collaborative spirit/energy - Knowledge sharing/alignment, etc. (knowlege appropriateness, the vp of DEI for planned parenthood -- are they appropriate for this room? does their knowledge grow w this knowledge?) shared knowledge growth opportunities
  • Capacity for learning

Self-directed/proactive Triage (Considering above, Accommodations requests, Disclaimers, Alternative (spaces/opps))

  • Looking more broadly at the movement itself. Seeing barriers as exist and engaging in triage process.
  • Who (Considering access conditions) these are people you can meet with
  • then Welcoming + entering space (what's the meat of onboarding)
    • ..

what comes with onboarding?

  • Participation (verb of participating in this event) - Activities of the movement, to be involved in, is to be-- (Diff ways for people to participate/show up in the space)
    • Knowledge sharing/making
    • Listening
    • Connection-building/Networking
    • Resource sharing/making (documenting)
    • inviting others in/spreading the word
    • Stewardship - The intangibles of community building
    • ..

Onboarding in terms of interpersonal/active practice

  • Gaining context (as someone new, eg catching up), planning
  • (getting from pre-stage to full participation)

Barriers to entry

  • Hierarchies, cultural authorities (eg ballroom, questioning may not be welcome)
  • having to participate in tribute/respect, reflect history/values of the mvmt
  • Adherence to community guidelines
  • People with direct experience at the forefront, but how to plug in those w/o that exp
    • A lot of orgs ask people to donate as their way of bringing ppl in
  • ..

Audiences/Roles | Strategy/Goals | Tools/skills | Actions (see below) eg infrared network has a big list but no "what's next"? Diversifying strategies/goals good way to ensure people can adapt participation activities to them tools - strategies may need/use, and we need people developing

How do we actually onboard, get meaningful participation

this room -- what are the actual resources/roles that need to be built for meaningful participation?

Roles:

  • role of community technologist
  • Stewards/Caretakers
  • Facilitators
  • Documenters
  • Historian
  • Translator
  • psychosocial (therapists, healers, feelers)
  • Advocates
  • Creators/imagineers
  • Radical Welcomers
  • Third Spacers (eg making quiet spaces, happy hours after event, recharge/rest, etc)

things: communication platforms/resources (wiki, etc)

  • Where we can be (individually/together)
  • Values
  • Where we can be
  • Known presence

3rd spaces (Being not doing opps)

  • escape valve
  • quiet space
  • recharge
  • rest
  • recover
  • Being (not tied to output/productivity)
  • Non-exploitative
  • No goals/outputs
  • organic (not organized, not forced to be there)

Values (important to have walking into space)

  • human-centered

Doing a pre-mortem. Onboarding fails, why?

  • Don't have different goals for different audiences (only have one big goal)
  • Diff ways for people to participate/show up in the space
  • Ways to know people are there
