The realtime web: how new mediums effect organizing
Real time - not necessarily collaboration Collaboration - not necessarily realtime
both is what's a big deal.
Example - important part of the movement - livestream with video - chat room live asking questions of the person taking the video
What are the plusses and minuses of using tools to do collaboration - what can we do now that we couldn't do anymore. How to build a layer on top of that livestream to get things done.
Online assembly application - "fishbowl" - skype conversation - lots of people talking - other people are observing and asking questions and contributing.
Get people in various dispersed groups to do assembly-like things.
Online collaboration also happening to get an organization within a movement to get things going.
Message and medium can come together - new area for us.
- List tools available
- List what kind of collaboration organizations want to have happen
Realtime <- - - - Rapid (1-7 days)- - - - - -> Durable (archive)
Small (2-3 in chat) <------------> Large (5000 video feed)
Having historical record is important. Can copy and paste chats into notes - making sure there are records, and have them able to be cataloged and searched.
Concept of prioritization and facilitation of communication.
It is possible to easily build configurable chat rooms. Example - an assembly that is coming up with a list of demands.
Examples: Livestream Facebook Polls
How can you have quick infographics - results of opinions. "Digital version of a twinkle."
Amplify things you like - vote up comments, etc. Bringing that into the realtime sphere...
Now things are mostly services. When it comes to making thigns specific - can cobble together things from open source technology -
Googledocs - Rapid and mostly small Livestream twitter slideshare idea oncore skype google hangouts SMS etherpad data couch sunlight live - wrapping public participation around cspan (archived - record of realtime events.) model for audience vs. participant roles webhuddle freedom phone - a menu-driven voicemail system twillio adhearsion - ruby on rails wrapper for asterisk blockboard - see what your neighbors are saying about things - about geography Wufoo - paid service - form generators. ushahidi - asynchronous google moderator
Security vs. Archive identity vs. Anonymity priority vs. facilitaiton decision making moderation
Blend audio video and text verification, voteup and twinkle - stack overflow as a model database/spreadsheet collaborative editing credibility/reputation login access/control audience vs. partipant roles relationship between virtual and local (Can use SMS as a way to integrate to the real world) How to gauge the mood of the audience? Measuring audio - using arduino boards to measure volume. Technology in the classroom - how students communicate with professors - instant feedback from Mapping layer - thinking of how to build mapping layers
additional random notes that sorta replicate much of what was said - things we want the realtime web to do:
priority / facilitation
notes and note taking
realtime chat -- building a chatroom and building a chatroom culture
vote up or twinkle
verification models for reports or info
blend audio video and text
data and spreadsheet -- docs
