facilitated by Matt Holland

The Far Side of 40 million

  • Avaaz - 43 million email addresses
  • 5 million as of 4 years ago, when Matt started
  • Has also managed lists of 750K
  • Even asking a question of a database can take days with 40 million+ records

Benefit - DIY

  • Orkut example: turn up the volume when there's a spike
  • Dev team can make an event share button and deploy
  • Things get much harder when you have to build your own, e.g., building your own email sending service
  • But some similar aspect no matter the list size, e.g., concrete TOC

Testing

  • Testing is not just about A vs. B
  • Also, exceeding a certain threshold of engagement
    • e.g., If this email doesn't convince 5% of people who open it to take action, we're not sending it (beyond the test list)
