The Far Side of 40 million
- Avaaz - 43 million email addresses
- 5 million as of 4 years ago, when Matt started
- Has also managed lists of 750K
- Even asking a question of a database can take days with 40 million+ records
Benefit - DIY
- Orkut example: turn up the volume when there's a spike
- Dev team can make an event share button and deploy
- Things get much harder when you have to build your own, e.g., building your own email sending service
- But some similar aspect no matter the list size, e.g., concrete TOC
Testing
- Testing is not just about A vs. B
- Also, exceeding a certain threshold of engagement
- e.g., If this email doesn't convince 5% of people who open it to take action, we're not sending it (beyond the test list)
