Privacy by Policy vs. Privacy by Design
Kindle Fire
-made by one company; don't know what it does; promises not to give up our data -we have no insight as to whether they break that promise -at best there's a law that supposedly protects us -know exactly who we are (we can't even buy it with cash)
-Privacy by Policy? -is there anything that would stop Amazon from violating your privacy? -its policy?
What's the difference between a cell phone and a surveillance device? -the policy -the point of a cell phone is to connect a signal to a location; privacy is only available because the phone carrier doesn't disclose it to others through its policy
Just by having the phone number of a cell phone it's possible to know the location up to a neighborhood of a city -HLR - Home Lookup Registry -when you send an SMS, the phone company routes that SMS to a specific number and THAT number has a fixed geographic attribute -given only 1¢, you can make a query about where the cell phone is

Phones are a disaster for anonymity
BUT
There IS hope!!
TOR
YOu connect to web sites through the tor network so all it sees is the TOR network. NOT the IP address -version of firefox -includes https everywhere an other add-ons -you can change your IP address by clicking "Use a new identity"
You can set up your local computer to be a TOR node in the chain of an onion change -different TOR node segment the transfer of data so that each segment along the way can only see its segment -also, the segment changes every give five minutes -when you click on "use a new identity", it rebuilds the segments of the circuit
Everything is free as in beer and free as in speech
Tor makes no promises. There are different parties in the node network who know little bits about you as you query the internet. This is the opposite of Privacy by Policy.
When you do things in the TOR browser, it is not traceable to you.
You can use TOR with other applications that support Proxies like Adium
