Netvibes – allows you to create searches via twitter and rss on different topics http://netvibes.com
These systems are designed for grazing, they look overwhelming but you don't need to go too deep.
Use key influencers to amplify your work, they will give back.
There is a #hack4change community, she discovered this by listening.

https://hootsuite.com/ - social media management dashboard. You can create columns to check and monitor particular hash tags. Is the most important of all of these tools. You can create dashboards that combine hashtags.
Http://commun.it – twitter management. It will suggest people to follow or re-engage.
Http://socialbro.com – Susan's favorite tool. Interface is intimidating. Provides a lot of metrics and great images.
When you think about how you engage with people think about a value scale and how much they really make an effort with your content. The tools tell you who your valuable influencers are.
Make lists of tweeters who can assist you – twitter has a list tool to store and classify other twitters.
Let the most popular people on that list know that you have added them to the list to get re-tweets.
Create names that are flattering so people are happen to be in.
http://tweetchat.com/ is a great way to build your community – great way to have an event with an influencer. The events are very easy to put on and are a great marketing opportunity. Have pre-fab questions and prepped answers before you start.
Use hashtags to go beyond your present circles – eg. if at dev summit also use the tag #sf so people watching San Fran events will pick it up.
All of your online 'properties' should use the same name. .@ is a way to ensure that all people, not just the followers of that tweeter, will get the msg.
