Aspiration Tech Dev Summit ‘24 Design Working Group Notes November 20, 2024

  • Building a shared understanding of co-creative design (co-design)
    • Pay folks for their input for equity
    • Put decision making in communities’ hands

Imaging idea generation as a funnel:

  • Diverge: coming up with many ideas
  • As you go through the process, the ideas converge (identify a few ideas that hone in on the problem you’re trying to solve)

Design Justice (designjustice.com)

  • Matrix of Domination
  • The Dataset Nutrition Label: helps identify gaps in addressing user needs

Factors: -Lack of empowerment: how do we figure it out? -Biased datasets → building the wrong thing -Budget limitations - Time limitations

  • Alignment (especially with leadership)
  • Capacity to collaborate with others
  • Engagement
  • Solving "all the things with one thing" (example, Swiss Amy Knife)

- Tech as sociotechnical (Scandinavian design)

  • "Make it pretty"
  • Lost in translation (in communicating design)
  • What is the actual practice?
  • tailor message for the audience

Participatory action (power shifts) redefining problem - Creative problem solving (socialization)
